IAN YOUNGER SIXES 2014

The 20th Ian Younger Sixes took place on Saturday 7th June at GHA Rugby Club.

This was a new venue for us and the pitches were grass for the first time since our Cowglen days.

The Friday pre-tourney took place in the Florida Park where a karaoke was enjoyed by all who were there.

The Saturday dawned to sunny weather but sadly the forecast for later in the day was poor to say the least. The rain was meant to be heavy from 2pm onwards and unfortunately the forecasters got it right but the tournament carried on with the shelter in the stand, and the bar, keeping people dry between games.

There were also team call offs to contend with a couple of days before the tournament but we ended up with 16 teams in the main draw, 12 in the Masters and 3 in the Youth Tournament.

Once all the pitches were set up we got kicked off and we had “proper” referees for the first time to aid the running of the tournament with Raph “The Taff” O’Keeffe again in charge of the fixtures.

In the Ian Younger Sixes we had two groups of five and one of six.

Group A saw our own QP Hoops go through along with Falkirk Mallards, making their first appearance, and Ormond Saints.

In Group B Nottingham Forest and Troon progressed to the Quarter Finals whilst in Group C, the six team group, Partick Thistle, Ayr United and Leyton Orient (for only the second time I think) made it through.

Into the Quarters and Partick, Troon, the Hoops and the Mallards all won through to the Semis.

First timers Falkirk knocked out holders Partick by a single goal in the Semis whilst our own Hoops reached the Final thanks to a late Craig McKenna goal.

For the first time since 1995 a Queen’s Park team reached the Final and two goals from Scott Macrae gave the home team a 2-1 victory, a great way to celebrate the Patron’s 20th anniversary tournament.

The winning squad was:- David Stewart, Derek Muir, Scott Kilpatrick, Scott Macrae, Craig McKenna, Gary Duncan, Derek Muir and Andy Dick (c)

The Plate was a depleted competition due to the weather but five teams took part in a high scoring competition which saw JK Jalgpallihaigla from Estonia becoming our first ever overseas competition winner after defeating our Irn Bru team in the Final.

The Gary Brooks Masters had twelve teams split into four groups and the criteria this year was Over 40’s which was much better adhered to than previous years.

Unfortunately for the old boys Coasters decided to upgrade to the Masters as they only had six players available who were all eligible.

They qualified out of Group A along with Shrewsbury with our Classic QP team finishing bottom, deservedly.

In Group B Partick and St.Mirren, perennial trophy winners, were the unsurprising top two with the QP Spangle Army finishing in a creditable third place.

Both Semi Finals went to penalties with Coasters and St.Mirren reaching the Final.

In a top class Final a single goal from Coasters was enough to see the trophy head to Oban.

John Scott was in the winning team for Coasters just as he had been for QP in 1995 at the Patron's first Sixes.

In the Plate Well Posh (with two Grooms from Posh, and four from Well) and the Spangles won through to the Semis with the Spangles and Ormond Saints winning through to the Final.

Ormonds, with ex proper Saints player Mark Treanor in their ranks, won 3-1 in the Final but the eclectic mix of Spangles put up an excellent show.

Three teams competed in the Rab MacDonald Youth Tournament and our QP team won both their games to win the trophy for the first time.

After the football was over everybody retired to the function to get out of the rain and for the presentations.

The inaugural Martin Kelly Goalkeeper of the Tournament was presented by Brian Kelly to Derek Abrahams of St.Mirren.

The legendary Jazza then presented the Sixes medals and trophies to the following:-

Rab MacDonald Youth Tournament – Queen’s Park

Gary Brooks Masters – Coasters; runners up St.Mirren

Gary Brooks Masters Plate – Ormond Saints

Ian Younger Sixes – Queen’s Park; runners up Falkirk Mallards

Ian Younger Sixes Plate - JK Jalgpallihaigla

25th Tournament Appearance - Leyton Orient

After a long break we had the Quiz and Leyton Orient were victorious.

The night time saw the usual great party with plenty of people on the dance floor and the whole day was excellent despite the weather.

A huge thanks to Claire and all at GHA for being such helpful hosts and we will be using their facilities again next year.

Thanks also to John Cameron for his help with the barbecue; Foxy MaRoxy for arranging the goals from Muirend Pavilion; Jim Carberry for organising the referees; Raph The Taff for yet again organising the fixtures; and to the incomparable Crossers without whom we would have struggled to have made the day possible.

And, of course, thanks to everybody that turned up and made the day such a success. It was certainly one of the best tournaments we’ve had with the atmosphere between the teams being as good as ever.

See you at the next Sixes on Saturday 6th June 2015. RESULTS
